Whilst there is divided opinion within the coaching sector about whether psychometric or psychological assessment should become a standard element of the coaching process, what is increasingly clear is that it is important for coaches working at the Mastery level of coaching practice to have a clear understanding of what assessment methods are available to coaches and when it is appropriate to apply these approaches ethically and appropriately in organisations. The key issue is being able to support clients in making decisions about when and how assessment can be integrated into the coaching process to ensure maximum client benefit.
This session will cover both individual and team assessment providing an overview of the different assessment options available to coaches. We will also highlight the issue of boundary management and the issues associated with when and how to refer a coaching client to an expert provider of psychological services for an in-depth psychological assessment.
Individual and team assessment processes will be explored through case examples using Saville Consulting WAVE, Team Profile Analyzer and Team Sociomapping as illustrative examples to show how an integrated approach to assessment works in practice. We will also show you how it is possible to apply assessment at different stages of the coaching process to ensure maximum client benefit.

24th February 2010
St Antony’s College, Oxford
The terms team and team-working are probably the most overused buzz words in organisations and often applied inappropriately to all kinds of ‘work groups’. A team is not just a group of people working alongside each other, the term team when applied correctly refers to a key organisational unit consisting of people who work interdependently with each other towards the attainment of a common goal. Teams are fundamental to most engineering & technology businesses and vital to the success of research, development & manufacturing in this sector. This short session will focus on delivering core concepts and skills that engineers and technologists can cultivate to create and maintain high performance teams.

The Division of Work and Organisational Psychology (DWOP) 2nd biennial Conference
27th March 2009
Dublin, Ireland
Pauline Willis will be talking on the subject of
“Creating high performance teams and organisational success through team coaching”
With the recent economic downturn and the ‘credit crunch’ it is increasingly difficult for organisations to identify and implement solutions they can be confident will deliver both the short and long term results that are essential for both organisational survival and success as the world economy recovers. Clients are now looking for solutions that are grounded in research and have demonstrable organisational value through evidence based practice and robust evaluation. Whilst individual coaching can be simplified to a set of processes that can be taught to and implemented by almost anyone in an organisation, this is not the case with team coaching which requires greater understanding and appreciation of the organisational context and an understanding of how individuals and groups behave and develop. There are many ways to approach team coaching and to use the full extent of our expertise as organisational psychologists, so whilst the economic downturn has presented some challenges both for our clients and for us as service providers, Team Coaching is a way of offering a cost effective, integrated solutions for the needs of many organisations in the current economic climate.

At the 1st International Meeting of Coaches in Prague hosted by the Czech Coaching Association CAKO coaches from across the globe were brought together for three days of presentations, workshops and dialogue to foster the sharing of knowledge and ideas. The climate was of respectful international collaboration amongst coaches from different professional backgrounds and approaches to coaching.
Everywhere you look these days you see the term coaching. Coaching took off as a niche in the personal development industry in the 1980’s. Since then a number of organisations providing specialist coach training and development services have been at the forefront of a rapidly growing industry. One of the themes highlighted at the CAKO IMC was the fact that expertise in the practice of coaching is drawn from a number of different traditional areas of practice. As this is the case it is important to ensure that practitioners are appropriately qualified both in coaching practice and have relevant training or qualifications in related domains of practice. Discussions and a presentation by leading UK Coaching Psychologist Pauline Willis highlighted that the Business and Psychological underpinnings of coaching are key areas which are gaining popularity and importance. Increasingly advanced coach training programmes are looking to traditional disciplines such as psychology, organisational development and management for tools and techniques that will increase the depth and power of the coaching relationship.
The open and collaborative climate set in the Czech Republic though the 1st IMC is a fitting precursor to a major event due to be held in Dublin 2008. The Global Convention on Coaching or GCC as it is known, has been brought together to support the mutual exploration of the future of the coaching industry by all stakeholders in coaching. Difficult questions such as ‘what does the specialist domain of knowledge for coaching consist of?’ and ‘what training and qualifications are really needed for a practitioner to set out shop as a ‘professional’ coach?’ will be covered through the process of dialogue and scenario development.
One of the leaders of this initiative speaking at the Czech conference was Australian Psychologist and co-editor of the ICPR, Dr Michael Cavanagh. At the end of three days of sharing and dialogue, Michael extended a warm invitation for all coaches and other stakeholders in coaching, from all backgrounds and all countries, to come forward and take a place in a global consultation process that will continue in the spirit of openness and collaboration that was modelled in the Czech Republic in September 2007. Support for the GCC has been strong across the coaching community with a number of prominent names stepping forward to take part in the working groups that form the operational engine of the convention.
Participation in the open consultation in the lead up to a convention event to be held in Dublin in July 2008 is open to everyone who has an interest in any aspect of coaching as a domain of practice. The consultation leading up to the convention over the next six months is taking place online, so participation is free and easy if you have computer access. If you are interested in taking part you can complete the online application form at
